17 Jan 2002 - Anders Edlundh (Sweden): On the Future of Bluetooth

Tapio,

No doubt big improvements will be done in both 802 (and Bluetooth)
implementations although the design criteria are fundamentally
different and that's what you need to change to really make a difference.

The main question about all this is. Do we think that truly mobile
applications where you need to push some data will happen in the future?
You bet! It will be as natural as the phone is today, although it will
definitely need to connect more stuff than just the phone to network.
How do you connect these devices to the net? 3G and Bluetooth is a
prefect fit, neither is going to be successful without the other.
Theoretically 802 could replace Bluetooth but never 3G. Why is GPRS not
taking off? It's not hard to understand, how useful is "wapping" on a
T39! All the usages you enable by connecting the devices to the future
terminal will change that!

What is the strong driver of 802 in hot spots?? It certainly is not
compelling new usage scenario, it's mainly moving the computer out of
the office. The trade offs are going to be speed and cost. Long term I
am not willing to bet too much on WLAN, especially not the 5GHz versions
for that scenario. In the office it's a different story though, no doubt
WLAN will grow.

The "vivendi" argument about speed makes me even more worried. I bet he
is looking at everything from a computer perspective, which is totally
irrelevant when it comes to 3G. Computing is just a "niche market" in
that respect. For truly mobile devices 128K will go along way for
several years.

Will be interesting too see what really happens, like on the stock
market it would be nice with a crystal ball!
